Tramonti
Since our cuisine consists of mostly southern dishes from the Campania region in Italy we figured a little history lesson was in order.
Don't worry Pictures included =)
Campania is a region celebrated for its climate, the fertility of the lands and the astonishingly beautiful landscapes. The territory is mostly gentle hills, however there a few parts such as the Matese mountains (a chain of mountains in central Italy) that have more of a rugged terrain of the Irpinia area.
The Territory
Located on the Gulf of Naples is the mighty Vesuvius Volcano, it is one of the very few still active volcanoes in Europe. World Famous for high cliffs, sandy bays, grottoes and islands lies the two beautiful gulfs of Naples and Salerno with
the Amalfi coast, separated by the Sorrento peninsula.
Each view an enchanting postcard picture, and such a great
experience for the senses, the feel of the air, the odors of the pine
trees, lemons and oranges, that the ancients rightly called this region "felix ager", A HAPPY LAND.
Population
The population, over 5,700,000 inhabitants, in 551 municipalities, is
concentrated around Naples and Salerno, while the mountainous area
is very low populated. Agriculture is mostly intensive, cattle raising
and fishing are declining, industries are mostly concentrated in the
Neapolitan area, and crafts based on coral and ceramics are still quite
important. But the greatest resource is probably tourism, since Naples,
Capri, Sorrento, Pompei, Paestum, Positano, Amalfi, Caserta and its
Royal Palace - just to mention a very few - are world-famous
destinations.
Campania's dishes have evolved and matured much like the people that live there.
Pizza in its modern aspect and taste was conceived in Naples. Pizzas originating from Naples are
- Pizza fritti (fried pizza)
- Calzone (literally "trouser leg"), which is pizza fritta stuffed with ricotta cheese
- Pizza marinara
- Pizza Margherita.
Spaghetti is also a well-known dish from southern Italy and Campania.
Did you know the Neapolitans were among the first Europeans to use tomatoes not only as an ornamental plant, but also as food and garnish?! We truly learn something new everyday!
Tramonti
means sunsets in Italian, and we have to take it figuratively at this
popular Delray Beach restaurant since the main view it offers is the
opposite side of Atlantic Avenue. Outdoor tables are prized, though the
restaurant's carefully decorated and subtly lit interior offers a more
stylish image.
Image is a big thing at this restaurant opened in 2004 by the father and son team of Luigi and Marco Silvestri. Seasoned by running restaurants in New York, they know a thing or two about pleasing a clientele that wants to see and be seen. Having a sculpted bar and relatively reasonable prices seem to be paramount. Having consistently great food does not appear as important, nor do Tramonti's clientele of admiring regulars seem to require deferential service.
